Tour Descriptions

Monday, September 17

Lancaster/Amish Country:

LancasterYour day in Lancaster County will concentrate on one of the most conservative People - The Old Order Amish.  We begin with a visit to the Amish Farm & House for an introduction to their most unusual lifestyle.  These people, who have inhabited this area for more than 250 years, live today much like their forefathers who came to Pennsylvania in the early 1700's. Hear fascinating commentary as your guide relates information about their lifestyle, church services, clothing, language, transportation, weddings and more.

Next board the coach for a tour of the Back Country driving through their beautifully silent farmlands to experience first-hand the lifestyle of these Plain People from cradle to the grave. We pass by one-room school houses, cemeteries, a carriage maker, and working farms where mules and horses pull the machinery in the fields.  Enjoy a stop at a roadside stand where delicious homemade jellies, relishes, breads and cookies are sold and at an Old Order Amish home which houses a quilt shop.  Marvel at the exquisite handwork as you have the opportunity to chat with family members. Lastly, you will enjoy a family-style lunch in an Old Order Amish home, an unforgettable experience.

10 Hour Tour:  Pricing includes transportation, guide service, admissions, lunch in an Old Order Amish home & gratuities for driver and guide.

Duck Tour:

DuckThis is an 80-minute tour of entertainment, information and fun as you travel in an amphibious vehicle thru the historic area passing such sites as the Betsy Ross House, Christ Church Burial Ground (where five signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried including Ben Franklin), the Arch Street Meeting House, eclectic South Street and charming Society Hill. The highlight of the trip is brief, but it is a fun trip into the Delaware River for a great view of the city from the River and a unique view of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and more.

The Brandywine Valley – Longwood Gardens:

Longwood1Travel to the Brandywine Valley, the historically rich area along the Brandywine River which was the site where the continental Army gathered to stop the British advance on Philadelphia fighting the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777, where mill owners of the 18th & 19th century gathered to take advantage of the convenient water power, where fugitive slaves sought refuge through the Underground Railroad and where numerous artists gathered to capture the beauty of this landscape on canvas.

Attendees will enjoy a self-guided tour of Longwood Gardens, the world-renowned garden designed by Pierre S. DuPont using a mixture of American and European landscape and garden styles with some 11,000 different varieties of plants.  Here DuPont expressed his love of horticulture, music and fountains in creating the Italian Water Garden, Open Air Theater, fantastic water lily ponds, Topiary Garden and the spectacular glass-enclosed Conservatory with twenty different garden rooms featuring orchids, tropical plants, the silver garden and seasonal plantings.  Browse through the Peirce House, Pierre DuPont’s country home, now a museum concentrating on the history and development of the Gardens and enjoy one of the daily fountain shows – always a highlight of any visit to Longwood.  Vouchers will be provided for lunch in the lovely setting of the cafeteria of the Terrace Restaurant overlooking this beautiful garden.

Medicine Madness:

This is a favorite tour among medical professionals.  Attendees get a “dose of medicine” 18th century style before anatomy, anesthesia and antibiotics on this walking tour. We begin the afternoon at Pennsylvania Hospital, America’s first private health care institute.  It was here where the “poor” would go to be treated while the wealthy were nursed at home.  Next stop is the most macabre site of all – The Mutter Museum of the College of Physicians founded by Dr. Benjamin Rush, the Father of American Medicine, is like no other.  See specimens from the 1800’s of skin abnormalities suspended in formaldehyde or the original casting of Chang and Eng, the famous Siamese twins.  And lastly, we visit the home of Dr. Philip Syng Physick, the Father of American surgery.  This beautiful free-standing Federal style building is the largest in Society Hill.  The house is interpreted from the early 1800’s when Dr. Physick treated many famous people such as Chief Justice, John Marshall.

4 Hour Walking Tour:  Pricing includes transportation, guide service, admissions & gratuities for driver and guide.
